Saskia Witteborn, Associate Professor at School of Journalism and Communication and Associate Director, Research Centre on Migration and Mobility at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), is a visiting scholar at Telecom ParisTech in September 2017, within her sabbatical fall semester at the Berlin Institute for Empirical Migration and Integration Research, affiliated with Humboldt University. This project examines how asylum seekers and refugees participate in the digital knowledge economy and how they appropriate the digital knowledge economy for their own purposes and needs. The month spent at Telecom ParisTech is used to continue collecting data, which she is also collecting in Berlin from August to December 2017. In particular, she :
- collects data through interviews and participant observation on how refugees and asylum seekers participate in digital initiatives and practices (e.g., apps) in the urban space of Paris;
- learns from Prof. Dana Diminescu and her team how digital methods and practices can be used to understand migration (e.g., e-Diasporas Atlas ) and digital practice by (forced) migrants (e.g., apps for job search like JokaJobs).
